Education for Syrian Refugees
The Cause:
The nine years of military activity within Syria may finally be drawing to a close but the scale of humanitarian need remains. In Lebanon alone, there are an estimated 1.5 million Syrian refugees and almost half of these are children. Because of their refugee status thousands of these children are unable to attend school, which means an entire generation of children are at risk of missing out on an education.
The Programme: Education in Emergencies
Tearfund Ireland established a project for educating children within fragile states and protracted crises. Working through our local partners we provide teacher training and other measures which enable Syrian teachers to provide intervention education that will allow Syrian children to continue their education if they integrate into the formal system within Lebanon or elsewhere.
In addition to the core education intervention, this project creates a safe, caring, and protective environment – with child protection mechanisms and psychosocial support – so children can build resilience and recover from the trauma they’ve experienced.
In Lebanon we partner with MERATH who oversee the project at learning centres within two different refugee camps. Each learning centre supported 100 Syrian refugee children ages 6-12 with basic literacy and numeracy in Arabic and English, Science and Sports. During 2018 we were able to increase to 200 children in one of the learning centres.
Fundraising for Education in Emergencies
Even though we do not hear much about the Syrian refugees in the news, the need remains. Tearfund Ireland are committed to providing the intervention education for the Syrian children while they are in the refugee camps in Lebanon. We need to raise €45,000 each year to continue this important project.
